(Hong Kong, 1 March , 2025) Tournament organisers have just received notification today from Ronnie O’Sullivan that, due to the condition of his health, he regrettably will not be able to participate in the event. Hossein Vafaei, currently ranked World No. 33 will replace Ronnie O’Sullivan’s place in the competition.
Ronnie O’Sullivan stated, “I am very disappointed not to be competing. I had been eager to make my comeback in Hong Kong and have put in my utmost effort, but unfortunately must consider my health. I wish to sincerely thank the organisers and all the Hong Kong fans for their support.”
Hossein Vafaei stated, “It’s a real shame that Ronnie is not able to play at the moment and I wish him all the best. I am relieved now to have this chance and I hope I can take advantage. I am thrilled to have this opportunity to travel to Hong Kong and compete in such a big tournament. It is a huge and exciting event for all the players.”
The organisers very much regret that Ronnie is not now able to participate, but obviously his health has to be the absolute top priority. The organisers are nevertheless confident that the tournament have a stellar field of world-class players to enthuse and excite Hong Kong snooker fans.
This will be the first ranking tournament held in Hong Kong since 1989. Notably, Judd Trump will be competing at home after becoming a resident of Hong Kong. Other all-time greats include China’s top player Ding Junhui, Mark Selby, Neil Robertson, Shaun Murphy, Mark Allen, John Higgins, Mark Williams and current World Champion Kyren Wilson.
The event will set new records with the highest ever prize money for the World Grand Prix, a total of £700,000 and the biggest ever crowd for a world ranking event, with 5,000 spectators experiencing this premier snooker event live at the brand-new Kai Tak Arena.
